Ten insurance groups write more than three-quarters of U.S. private passenger auto insurance. NAIC’s market share report shows $371.04 billion in direct premiums written in 2025, with State Farm and Progressive each holding about 18.6%. Size alone does not tell you who will be cheapest in your ZIP code — each insurer prices locations, drivers and vehicles differently — which is why comparing several quotes matters.

Former brands

Esurance was bought by Allstate in 2011 and Allstate announced in 2019 that the brand would be phased out (Insurance Journal). Prudential no longer sells auto insurance in the U.S.; it agreed to sell its property and casualty business, including auto, to Liberty Mutual in 2003 (SEC filing).

How to compare insurers fairly

Request quotes with identical drivers, vehicles, limits and deductibles; then look beyond price at claims handling and complaint records. The NAIC Consumer Insurance Search shows complaint data by company, and your state insurance department publishes consumer guides — linked from our state pages. Our ZIP comparison method has a worksheet.
