What a ZIP Code Car Insurance Quote Uses
Enter the ZIP code where the car is parked overnight. You will be taken to a partner form to request quotes.
A ZIP code starts the quote. It does not finish it. The price also uses the drivers, the car, the limits and the deductibles you type in.
The ZIP code is the garaging address
Insurers want the ZIP code where the car is parked overnight, which is usually your home. That location stands in for local claim patterns, theft, traffic, weather and what it costs to repair a car nearby. A quote built on a workplace ZIP, a relative's house or a P.O. box is a quote for the wrong place, unless the car really is kept there.
Using a different ZIP to chase a lower price is misrepresentation. It can lead to a denied claim or a cancelled policy. Students and service members should ask about special garaging rules before they enter a campus or base ZIP. The longer explanation of how location changes the rate is in how your ZIP code affects car insurance rates.
A few states limit how that location can be used. Michigan does not allow ZIP codes as an auto rating factor. California requires driving record, annual mileage and years of experience to carry more weight than other factors. Everywhere else, assume the overnight ZIP is one of the first things the quote prices.
Everything else the quote still needs
After the ZIP code, the quote prices the people who drive the car. Age, years licensed and driving record all move the number, and so does a licensed person in the household who was left off the form. A quote that omits a household driver looks cheaper than the policy you would actually be allowed to buy.
The vehicle matters next. Year, make, model and often the VIN tell the insurer what the car costs to repair and which safety features it has. A similar trim is not the same car. Annual mileage and whether you commute or drive for pleasure are separate answers, and they should be the real ones.
Coverage is the part drivers most often change by accident. Liability limits are the most the policy pays other people. Deductibles are what you pay before collision or comprehensive pays for your own car. A six-month premium and a twelve-month premium are different numbers even when every other line matches. If you already have a policy, the quote may also ask whether that coverage has a lapse.
Where state law allows it, an insurer may also use a credit-based insurance score. Michigan does not allow credit scores as an auto rating factor. None of these inputs pick your limits for you. The legal floor is in minimum requirements by state, and the choice between liability and physical damage is in liability vs full coverage.
A short comparison
| Keep identical | What goes wrong if it changes |
|---|---|
| Overnight ZIP code | The quote prices a different place than the one where the car is kept. |
| Drivers and vehicle | A missing driver or a different trim makes the premium look lower than the policy you can buy. |
| Limits, deductibles and term | A cheaper figure is often a shorter policy, a higher deductible or a lower limit. |
How to request the quote
- Write down the overnight ZIP, the drivers, the VIN, the limits and the deductibles before you start.
- Check your state's minimum, then choose the limits you actually want compared.
- Request more than one quote on the same day from the quote form.
- Set aside any quote that changed a driver, a limit, a deductible or the term.
- Read what is left with how to read a car insurance quote.
